A Pathmodel for Death AnxietA Anxiety to Suicidal Ideation of the Elderly

Abstract
This study investigates multidimensional aspects of elderly¡¯s death anxiety, and how this anxiety impacts on their suicidal ideation through depression. For the purpose of the study, the survey was conducted and 431 elderly over 60 year - old who reside in Taegu and Kyongpook province participated. The result of the study indicated that health status and financial status of the elderly showed statistically significant differences in the level of death anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation of the elderly. Based on multidimensional model, death anxiety consisted of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and transpersonal anxiety. To find out how death anxiety of the elderly impact on the suicidal ideation directly and indirectly through depression, multiple liner regression was utilized after controling for health and financial status of the elderly. The results showed that intrapersonal and interpersonal anxiety were statistically significant factors in explaining the elderly¡¯s suicidal ideation directly and indirectly. Intrapersonal factors more influenced suicidal ideation directly, while interpersonal factors more influenced indirectly through depression. Finally, based on the findings of the study, implications for the elderly services and recommendations of further study were provided.
